Four faculties of mind. Four Yugas. Four aims. A way of life, not a faith you join.
How the Caste System held a Society
The working idea was division of labor: knowledge, protection, production, and craft, each necessary, none a leftover. Standing was supposed to be able to move with skill and conduct. The later freeze is what made the map look like a cage.
The Purusha Sukta also pictures the four as limbs of one cosmic body. That image is traditional. It is a picture of integration, not a biology lesson.

Learning and counsel
Study, teaching, and advice that can tell power no. In the division of labor this is the knowledge function. Skill and conduct could move a person toward it.
Protection and public duty
The security function: force with a limit, so a household can sleep and a market can open. Recognition and service, not only birth, were how standing was supposed to move.
Production and trade
Grain, cattle, craft-wealth, commerce. The surplus function. A people that cannot make and trade cannot feed its other work.
Craft, service, making
The making function: build, mend, serve, keep the ordinary day possible. Not leftover labor. The rest of the system cannot eat without it.
Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha
The four aims of a human life. This is philosophy as a way of walking, not a religion you sign. If these are foggy, most arguments about who Hindus are will keep missing.

How you hold the line
The restraint that keeps the other three aims from wrecking you. Duty, yes, but also the grain of things: what can be done without lying to yourself.

Livelihood, property, skill, a surplus you can share. The old thought never treated wealth as a sin. It treated unbound appetite as disorder.

Kama
Desire with a house around it
Love, beauty, children, the ordinary hunger to be close to someone. Not a guilty leftover. A legitimate aim, provided it does not eat the other three.
मोक्ष
Moksha
The room that keeps the rest honest
Release. The reminder that even a well-run life is not the last word. Without this, dharma becomes policing, artha becomes hoarding, kama becomes appetite with a speech.
Four Yugas
Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali. A Puranic clock for how dharma, and with it a people's memory, thins across ages. Not a scientific calendar. A way of saying: forgetting is not new, and remembering is the work of the thin age.

The age of truth. Memory is whole. Speech, act, and inner life still match. Also called Krita: what is done is complete.

Dharma on three legs · Three
A third of the fullness is gone. Ritual and kingship have to carry what once lived unforced. Traditional placement of the Ramayana.

Dharma on two legs · Two
Certainty thins. Kin, law, and desire collide. Traditional placement of the Mahabharata. Memory still works, but it has to be argued for.

Kali Yuga
Dharma on one leg · The thin age
The store is noisy and short. Forgetting is the weather. Remembering who we are becomes a practice, not a default. That is why a journal like this exists.
Ramayana and Mahabharata
One is about keeping a vow when you have been sent away from the house. The other is about dharma after every clean option is gone. Working books for a way of life, not scripture to join.

Memory is Infrastructure
Civilizations do not vanish only when they lose land. They vanish when they lose the stories that teach them how to stand.
How Memory is Built
Vedanta and yoga do not split memory into four kinds. They name four functions of the inner instrument, the antahkarana. Citta is the store. Manas moves. Buddhi decides. Ahamkara says I. Ahankar is the same word in a shorter spelling.

Mind-stuff. Impressions, habits, the sediment of what you have lived. This is the faculty closest to memory. The others work in it and on it.

The mover
The mind that receives the senses, wavers, wants, and compares. It does not decide. It brings the next thing into view.

The judge
Discernment. The cut that says this, not that. Without buddhi, memory is only weather and manas never lands.
अहंकार

The I-maker
The sense that a thought, a memory, a duty is mine. Needed to walk a life. Ruinous when it swallows the other three.
Live the Order. Do not join a brand.
